The swimmers of the IU swimming and diving team completed day two of the Georgia Invitational on Saturday, as multiple swimmers entered the record books and kept both the men and women in the top five of the standings.
Junior Sam Trahin and freshman Steve Schmuhl gave the Hoosiers it's first wins in the overall competition, while sophomore Cody Miller entered the IU record books for the first time this season. Trahin won the 400-yard Individual Medley for IU's first win in a time of 3:49.42, an NCAA B-Cut qualifier, as he edged Georgia's Jared Markham by a mere .03 seconds. Meanwhile, after winning the 200-yard Backstroke in two of his previous three meets, Schmuhl continued his dominance in the pool, this time winning his first 200-yard Freestyle race of his career by .01 seconds with a time of 1:36.50 in a comeback photo-finish over Georgia's Jameson Hill. Finally, though he lost the race, Miller earned the fifth-fastest time in IU history in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 53.20, getting second to Cal's Nolan Koon. The Hoosiers also posted top-five finishes in the 200-yard Medley Relay and 800-yard Freestyle relay, finishing fourth in each.
Though the IU women's team did not record any wins on Saturday, multiple Hoosiers found their way into the IU record books. After setting the school record in the 200-yard Individual Medley yesterday, senior Allysa Vavra posted another record-book performance in the 400-yard IM, earning the third-fastest time (4:04.60) in a second-place finish behind Cal's Caitlin Leverenz. Though she did not get the record in the race, Vavra did clinch two things - an automatic spot in the NCAA Championships, and the recognition that the top five times in IU history in that event all belong to her. In other events, senior Margaux Farrell set the third and fifth best times in IU history in the 200-yard Freestyle, racing a 1:44.47 in preliminary heats and 1:44.52 in the finals, and the 800-yard Freestyle relay team of seniors Brittany Strumbel, Courey Schaefer, Nikki White and Farrell earning the fifth best time in IU history, racing at a time of 7:06.97.
Both the IU men's and women's teams currently are fourth in their respective standings, and will try to sneak in to the top three tomorrow, in the final day of the meet. Action will resume with preliminaries starting at 9:30 A.M., and finals starting at 3 P.M.
