Senior forward Carly Samp, a Barrington, Ill. native, played in 17 matches - starting 12 - as a freshman. She scored the second goal of her career, the game-winner when the Hoosiers defeated Illinois 1-0.

During her sophomore campaign, she doubled her goal total, and earned five assists.

Again, as a junior, she doubled her goal total from a season ago, as she scored eight goals and assisted on three others.

As a senior, she notched her 47th career point when she scored the game-winning goal Sept. 9 against Xavier.

Indiana escaped with a 1-0 victory over the University of Xavier, as Samp received the ball from sophomore midfielder Lisa Nouanesengsy at the top of the box. She converted.

"I got a ball from Lisa," she said after that match. "I turned, spun, hit it and it went in. I was glad we didn't go into overtime."

She was now sixth in career points, as she had scored 18 goals - including seven game-winners - and assisted on 11 others. The Hoosiers had 11 Big Ten matches to go, and one against Marquette.

On Sept. 11, she assisted on Velasquez's fifth goal of the season, 37 seconds into the match against Marquette.

She assisted on junior forward Orianica Velasquez's sixth goal Sept. 25 against Nebraska. Said goal was the Hoosiers' first during Big Ten play and set the stage for senior midfielder Devon Beach to score the game-winner 10 minutes later to propel IU to their first Big Ten win.

Lyon talked about his offense being dynamic. Samp's impact on that characterization will be indelible, as she finished with 18 goals and 13 assists. Her 49 points place her fifth in IU history.

Her accolades transcended the soccer pitch.

On November 4, she picked up Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. Per a release, "a student-athlete must maintain a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be in at least their second academic year at the school" for which they play.

Earlier this week, she was also recognized by the Big Ten Conference office as IU's nominee for the conference's Big Ten Sportsmanship award.
