The initial reports were correct.

The Big Ten Conference on Tuesday announced its two football divisions that become effective at the beginning of the 2011 season when Nebraska joins the conference.

The divisions, as most outlets reported, line up as follows (and, heavens, tell me the division names are only temporary):

  • Division X -- Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin
  • Division O -- Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern

Conference officials also said traditional and trophy rivalries between schools in separate divisions (notably Ohio State and Michigan) will continue with yearly matchups. Otherwise, out-of-division opponents will meet one another twice in a 10-year span.
