In the final matches of Group C, USA played Algeria and England played Slovenia.
After countless missed chances and the dreadful thought that the U.S. might go home from the World Cup early, the U.S. finally won with a 91st minute strike from the team's star Landon Donovan.
The goal sent the whole U.S.A into pure joy and ecstasy, while breaking the hearts of Algerian fans across the globe.
The win put the USA at the top of Group C with 5 points, and a greater amount of goals scored over England.
And in the other game between England and Slovenia, the British came away with all three points with a gritty 1-0 victory.
Jermaine Defoe, starting for Emile Heskey, scored in the 23rd minute of the match to give England the lead, and they held that lead all the way through.
Slovenia and Algeria finish 3rd and 4th in the group respectively, and go home.
In the final matches of Group D, Germany played Ghana and Australia played Serbia.
Germany knew before the game that it had to win to ensure their survival, and win they did, beating Ghana 1-0 with a brilliant goal from the wonderkid Mesut Ozil.
With the win Germany took the top spot in Group D, which looked doubtful after their tough loss to Serbia.
In the other game, Serbia and Australia were both fighting for their lives to remain in the 2010 World Cup. Australia had an inspired performance and scored two goals in the second half, the first from Tim Cahill on a header and the second from a Brett Holman strike.
However Serbia cut the deficit in half with a late goal from striker Marko Pantelic. But they could not find the equalizer, and both teams miss out on advancing into the knockout stages.
