The IU volleyball team hits the road this weekend for a pair of Big Ten matches, the first against No. 1 Penn State at 8 p.m. today.

A few quick notes before the Hoosiers (14-8, 3-5) take on the two-time defending national champion Nittany Lions (20-0, 8-0):

  • IU has never beaten Penn State. The Nittany Lions are 37-0 all-time against the Hoosiers.
  • Penn State has dropped just four sets in the 2009 season. Iowa and Ohio State each took one set from the Nittany Lions, and No. 11 Michigan forced five sets in the schools' Oct. 16 meeting.
  • Penn State leads the Big Ten in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, assists, kills and blocks.
  • Nittany Lions, junior Arielle Wilson and senior Megan Hodge, have the highest hitting percentages in the conference at .591 and .436, respectively. IU junior middle blocker Ashley Benson ranks sixth at a .376 clip.
  • Penn State First Team All-American setter Alisha Glass leads the Big Ten assists per set category with 12.08.
  • IU freshman defensive specialist Laura Matula has moved into seventh in the conference in service aces per set at 0.29. Matula totaled eight aces last weekend.
  • Penn State hitters thrive with setter Glass, writes Jocelyn Syrstad in The Daily Collegian.

The Hoosiers return to action tomorrow at 7 p.m. against Ohio State.
