Hey folks,
Noticed this during pregame stretching and just got it confirmed from J.D. Campbell: Kipp Schutz, a left-handed, power-hitting outfielder on the IU baseball team who has a rather impressive high school basketball resume is dressed for the Hoosiers tonight. Campbell said Schutz is on a tryout.
Schutz, an Evansville native, was drafted out of Harrison High School by the Orioles, but opted to come play for Tracy Smith at IU. He'll be a redshirt sophomore this year, and he's listed at 6-foot-4. Schutz was a three-year letterwinner and all-conference selection as a senior in basketball.
Another baseball player, pitcher Eric Arnett, was on the sideline during warm-ups, though he wasn't dressed out. Campbell said he didn't know of Arnett's status, but I'll assume he's not just Kipp Schutz's posse. Arnett is listed at 6-foot-5, and his athletic feats not on a baseball diamond in high school are so numerous that I'll just post them below, courtesy of IUHoosiers.com:
Garnered three all-conference selections in football and two in basketball ... was selected all-district in both sports in his final two years at Watkins ... was an all-state selection in football in his final campaign ... holds the school records at Watkins in home runs for baseball and for receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions in football ... was named the Licking County Male Athlete of the Year in his final year at Watkins
