Hey folks,
Got confirmation through Peegs tonight that Lawrence North standout Stephan Van reese committed to Louisville tonight. Rick Pitino reportedly flew (really? he couldn't drive?) up to Indianapolis to do the deed himself and extend a scholarship.
Van Treese was once quite high on IU's list, and vice-versa, but reports indicated that he fell out of favor with the Hoosiers -- and several other top-tier schools -- after a sub-par summer against AAU competition. There were rumors the 6-foot-7 high school senior would try to walk on in Bloomington, with a scholarship to follow later in his career.
It's likely that Van Treese no longer figured into Tom Crean's plans with the commitment of winger Christian Watford last week and the Hoosiers' obvious need for a true big man with only one full ride left to give. Still, some Hoosier fans might see this as something of a coup, and keeping in-state talent right there has always been a high priority for those who follow Indiana basketball. Personally, I don't think Van Treese made much sense for the Hoosiers anymore, but I'm a Southern boy, what do I know?
What do you think? Did you want Van Treese -- or SVT, as he is known on Peegs -- on campus? Or do you think the Hoosiers' needs lie elsewhere?
