First off, thank goodness BSU wide receiver Dante Love will be okay. You hate to see any player, regardless of which team, get hurt like that. All the best to the Love family.
Well guys, it was not a night to remember. The outcome of the game was horrific.
Ball State just may be the best team from the state of Indiana this year (and yes, better than Purdue too).
So where does IU go from here?
First off, the main concern has to be the defense and learning to stop the run. If you thought BSU running back MiQuale Lewis was good wait until you see MSU running back Javon Ringer. The latter may be a NFL first round draft pick.
And it seems the opposition is running to the opposite side of IU defensive end Greg Middleton. In the Murray State game and especially against Ball State, the opposing offense called many sweep plays, not to mention numerous draws up the gut away from Middleton.
IU coach Bill Lynch and his fellow coordinators need to get him involved. He didn't register 16 sacks last year for nothing.
Second, running back Bryan Payton needs to become a more valuable force on offense. We saw his number called a couple of times Saturday night, but I feel he's not getting a fair shot. Payton reminds me of a TJ Duckett, but we just haven't seen enough of him.
Lastly, can IU put its emotions aside and get ready for Big 10 competition. It's expected that all the players will say they'll put Ball State past them. But, will they? Look into your crystal ball and tell us your prophecy.
