ESPN has formulated a system to rank the top men's basketball programs since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in the 1984-1985 season. Here is a link to No. 50-No. 41.
All-Time IU is considered by most to be a top-5 to top-6 program (along with UCLA, UK, UNC, Duke and Kansas), but the Hoosiers have not been as hot recently. Only one of the program's 5 NCAA titles came since 1984. ESPN uses various factors from NCAA success to All-Americans to determine the most prestigious program.
Without any effort, I am going to guess that IU falls somewhere outside the Top-10, in the No. 11-No. 20 range. The NCAA title in 1987 . a loss in the championship game in 2002 and a Final Four showing in 1992 will help the Hoosiers' cause. As for No. 1, I'm going with UNC with Duke and UCONN contending for the top spot.
