I went to the Kelvin Sampson radio show tonight at the Hoosier Den at Foster Quad mainly to see what Sampson would say, but also to beg some free food off from freshman with extra meal points (any freshman readers out there, you know how to contact me). Here were some highlights:
Sampson said he was happy that the team was able to pull out two victories against Minnesota and Iowa. Host Don Fisher, the voice of IU basketball, commented on the Hoosiers recent rise in the polls. Sampson did not seem to interested, noting that he cares about if the team ends up in the Top 10 at the end of the season, no in January.
After a few segments, Sampson fielded questions from the audience, including one from your humble IDS reporter. I asked Sampson what he thought about having a non-conference game during the conference season and what the team will do now that the UConn contract is up after this year. Sampson said he didn't mind the match-up and said the time is dictated by TV (CBS in this case). He added that another "inter-sectional power" match-up will probably replace UConn and will likely be in January or February.
One person in the crowd asked Sampson how much college basketball he gets to watch with is busy schedule. Sampson said he watches coaches he is friends with, but it is Mrs. Sampson who watches basketball all the time. Sampson said he likes watching the Discovery Channel and the Food Network (but again, who doesn't).
The other notable question of the night came from a caller near Jasper, Indiana. The caller prefaced his question by saying he was really happy that Sampson was the coach of IU (never a good sign). He then went on to ask (more like rambled/lectured) why the subs don't get in once the PSU game seemed out of reach. Sampson was obviously frustrated with the question and gave a short answer that it had already been discussed.
