Dear Editor,
Our nation and state were built on the principle of providing equal opportunity for all individuals to direct their own lives, provided they do not infringe upon the rights of others. Our democratic system relies on majority rule for the greatest good, accompanied by a fundamental duty to safeguard the rights of minorities.
Unfortunately, due to illness or injury, a growing number of our fellow citizens live with physical disabilities that limit their daily activities. To uphold their rights, governments at all levels must ensure equal access to public facilities. Currently, many disabled individuals are unable to freely enter government buildings because entrances and restrooms lack automatic door openers. This is most prevalent in surrounding rural counties.
Please join me in asking members of the Indiana state legislature to sponsor legislation funding the installation of automatic electric door openers at all public government entrances and accessible restrooms.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Agostino, M.D., Indiana University 1989
