Indiana field hockey and No. 2 Iowa couldn't find a winner in regulation Sunday.
The Hoosiers and Hawkeyes entered overtime tied 1-1 at Dr. Christine H.B. Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa, two days after Indiana upset Iowa 3-1 in the teams' first meeting of the weekend.
Indiana junior goalkeeper Sadie Canelli started again in goal, while freshman goalkeeper Julia Claessens made her first start of the season for Iowa.
The offense was slow for both teams throughout the first quarter.
Indiana created its first real chance of the game with a penalty corner with 2:47 remaining. Senior forward/midfielder Theresa Ricci inserted the corner, but senior midfielder Inés Garcia Prado's shot missed. The ball went off a Hawkeye foot, giving Indiana another penalty corner with 2:31 remaining. Junior forward Mijntje Hagen took the second shot, but the Hoosiers could not capitalize.
Indiana continued to pressure Iowa's defense and eventually earned a shot on goal from freshman forward Agustina Gamonal. Claessens made the save to keep the game scoreless.
Meanwhile, Iowa didn't record a shot in the first quarter.
The defensive battle continued into the second quarter. The Hawkeyes eventually created a dangerous chance in front of an open net but Indiana freshman defender Berta Sáenz de Santa María stopped the ball before Iowa could score.
The Hoosiers briefly lost sophomore forward Celia Arroyo Cabezudo to an injury after the Iowa goalkeeper left her box and collided with her. Arroyo Cabezudo walked off the field and returned later in the game.
Iowa entered halftime without a shot attempt — the first time this season the Hawkeyes have been held without a shot in a half.
Iowa came out with more pressure in the third quarter, in contrast to Friday's contest when Indiana came out of halftime with momentum.
The Hawkeyes created several chances inside Indiana's circle with about eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Canelli made a save to keep the game scoreless. Fifth- year forward Frederique van Cleef generated both Iowa shots on goal during the stretch.
Iowa earned its first penalty corner with 2:45 remaining after an Indiana turnover. Senior midfielder Dionne van Aalsum took the shot, which went wide right.
Iowa recorded three shots in the third quarter after being held without a shot in the first half.
Indiana began the fourth quarter as the aggressor, earning three penalty corners with just over 12 minutes remaining. Sophomore forward/midfielder Molly Stutte took the final shot of the sequence but missed wide left.
Iowa finally broke through with 6:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. The second of two penalty corners led to a goal from sophomore forward Téa Fortpied, her first of the season. Rachel Herbine and Amber Millard-Smith were credited with assists.
Indiana answered less than five minutes later.
With the clock winding down, Indiana pulled Canelli for an extra attacker. The move paid off with 2:04 remaining when Ricci dove toward a pass from Stutte and got her stick on the ball, redirecting it into the cage to tie the game at 1-1.
Ricci’s goal sent the game to overtime, with neither team able to find a winner in the final two minutes of regulation.
In overtime, the Hawkeyes continued to push on offense, closing the gap in shots and shots on goal after Indiana held the advantage earlier in the game. Iowa earned multiple chances, including a penalty corner at 8:57, but the Hawkeyes couldn't find a goal.
The game went to a penalty shootout.
Iowa jumped out to a 3-0 lead and was one goal from ending the game. Indiana answered with three straight makes while Canelli stopped Iowa's attempts to tie the shootout at 3-3.
The shootout then went to sudden death.
Indiana missed its next attempt from Hagen, putting the game in the Hawkeyes' hands. Senior midfielder Dionne van Aalsum stepped up and converted, giving Iowa a 4-3 shootout victory.
Iowa finished with 13 shots and seven shots on goal, while Indiana recorded 12 shots and four shots on goal. Canelli made five saves for the Hoosiers, while Claessens had two for Iowa. Both teams finished with five penalty corners.
Indiana will return home to face the University of Michigan at noon Sept. 26 at Deborah Tobias Field. The game will stream on Big Ten+.
