Buckingham Companies, joined by Indiana University leaders and project partners, celebrated the grand opening of The Beverly on Friday with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and the announcement of a new scholarship fund.
Buckingham President and CEO Brad Chambers and Indiana University President Pamela Whitten participated in the ribbon-cutting at the new campus-adjacent apartment community, located at East Seventh and North Dunn streets.
The newly announced Buckingham Scholarship for Academic Advancement is backed by a $200,000 commitment from Buckingham Foundation and will support undergraduate students at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.
Chambers founded Buckingham Companies 42 years ago while he was a student at Indiana University. The Beverly reflects that longstanding connection to IU and Buckingham’s continued investment in Bloomington. Privately developed through close coordination with Indiana University, the property is an IU-related housing option serving students and other members of the university community.
"The early success of The Beverly and the opportunity to further our investment at Indiana University with this scholarship are both deeply meaningful to Buckingham, and consistent with our values and the humility we feel at the potential impact they provide," said Chambers. "We are proud and grateful to play a role in something that honors this place, serves the IU community, and looks toward the future and all its possibilities."
The six-story community includes 162 units and 420 beds, with furnished floor plans ranging from studios to four-bedroom apartments. Amenities include study spaces on every floor, a fitness center, community gathering areas, private courtyards and guest suites.
The building’s brick and Indiana limestone exterior was designed to complement the architecture of the surrounding campus while creating an active connection to both IU and downtown Bloomington.
“The opening of The Beverly marks an important milestone for Indiana University as our first public-private partnership for student housing,” said Indiana University President Pamela Whitten. “Our collaboration with Buckingham has created a vibrant new residential community that enhances the student experience while demonstrating how innovative partnerships can help us meet the evolving needs of our university community.”
