Science educator and television personality Bill Nye will be coming to Indiana University for “A Conversation with Bill Nye” at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at the IU Auditorium. The event is a collaboration between the Union Board’s Lectures Committee and STEM Committee and will be sponsored by IU's College of Arts and Sciences.
Nye is best known as the host of the science education TV program “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” which had five seasons and ran from 1993 to 1998. On the show, Nye explained different science subjects and experiments in a way that was accessible to kids and aimed to get them invested in STEM subjects. Over the course of its run, “Bill Nye the Science Guy” won 19 Daytime Emmy Awards.
Since the show concluded in 1998, Nye has remained a leading science advocate. He currently serves as Chief Ambassador and Vice Chairman of the Board at The Planetary Society, one of the world’s largest non-profit space organizations. He has also hosted the science shows “Bill Nye Saves the World,” which ran for three seasons on Netflix, and “The End Is Nye,” a disaster-based documentary series that ran for one season on Peacock.
Over the course of his career Nye has received many awards for his decades-long impact in science education, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 2025, and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the fourth Annual Children's and Family Emmy Awards in March 2026.
Nye’s event at the IU Auditorium will be hosted by junior Lucy Gray, the director of lectures for the IU Union Board, and will focus primarily on Nye’s role as “The Science Guy,” his work in science advocacy and his career both before and after “Bill Nye the Science Guy.”
