The Indiana Daily Student has been awarded the Dan Rather Medal for News and Guts for their coverage during university censorship.

This award is earned through reporting in spite of situations such as university or government resistance, and university threats to coverage. Dan Rather is a lifelong journalist who has been covering news since he was a student at the University of Texas. Later on, he would become a "CBS Evening News" anchor for 24 years.

“These journalists did an incredible job at documenting how the university attempted to censor their reporting, without fear or favor,” one of the Rather Medals judges said. “They kept on the story despite pressure from the university. The Indiana Daily Student reports are exactly what the Dan Rather Medals for News and Guts should be recognizing.”

"Indeed, yours was just the kind of dogged reporting that Dan Rather had in mind when he created these awards with the University of Texas" said John Bridges, another judge.

On Monday April 13, editor-in-chief Mia and Andrew got the chance to speak with Dan Rather. They said "We are beyond honored to have received this award and to see the work of the newsroom recognized. It's no secret that the last six months have been challenging, but every day IDS journalists continue to show their courage and commitment to telling stories that matter."

Dan Rather said "This year’s winners displayed true courage and dedication in telling their stories and carrying out their mission."

The awards comes with a medal and $5,000 prize.
