Indiana track and field dominates Battle on the Bayou with event wins, bests

Indiana track and field traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to compete at the Battle on the Bayou on Friday and Saturday hosted by Louisiana State University. Indiana placed high among the 37 teams present, with several of the 41 Hoosiers sent securing personal bests.  

Freshman Kailen Kramer and senior Tyler Carrel competed in the women’s and men’s pole vault Friday. Kramer finished eighth in the women’s competition with a 4.00-meter vault, and Carrel finished second in men’s with a 5.55-meter vault. This mark now ranks Carrel fifth in the NCAA for the event. 

Freshman Lukas Brauc competed in his first outdoor meet for the Hoosiers, placing 10th in the men’s pole vault with a mark of 5.00 meters. 

In the men’s long jump, senior Alex Smith and freshman James Burnett finished in eighth and 13th, jumping 7.24 meters and 6.95 meters, respectively. 

On the women’s side, senior Kelly Moran placed 23rd with a jump of 5.66 meters. 

The Hoosiers saw their first personal best of the meet in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, as junior Kai Snell finished with a new personal best time of 1 minute, 0.87 seconds, earning 10th place. Junior Ryann Parrish finished close behind in 1:01.67 for 13th place. 

The men’s 400-meter hurdle race saw senior John Colquitt and sophomore Tyler Tarter finish in 10th and 11th with respective times of 52.19 and 52.71 seconds.  

Sophomore Aliyah Johnson added to the Hoosiers’ list of personal bests at this meet, running 23.93 in the women’s 200-meter dash and placing 29th overall. 

Sophomore Michaela Quinn placed eighth in the women’s 1,500-meter run with a new personal best of 4 minutes, 23.26 seconds. Sophomore Joey Rastrelli followed in 19th with a time of 4:31.14. 

To close out the first day of competition, senior Camden Marshall won the men’s 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:43.39. Freshman D’Angelo Brown also raced in the 1,500, running a new personal best of 3:55.35, placing 29th. 

Starting off the second day of competition, sophomore Josie Page finished 10th in the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.71 meters. Freshman Kaselle Davis and senior Taylor Schoonveld tied for 13th, both having marks of 1.66 meters. 

In the triple jump, Moran placed 10th for the women with a mark of 12.20 meters, and sophomore Vince Davero placed 14th in the men’s competition with a jump of 13.07 meters. 

The women’s 800-meter run saw three Hoosiers place in the top 10. Sophomore Nola Somers Glenn and junior Lily Myers finished eighth and 10th, running 2:08.09 and 2:08.38, respectively. Myers secured a new personal best with her time.  

But sophomore Veronica Hargrave won the race in her first back since the NCAA Indoor Championship meet three weeks prior. Hargrave finished in 2:02.08 seconds, ranking her eighth in the NCAA for the women’s 800. 

Marshall continued to dominate by winning the men’s 800-meter run in 1:46.39, ranking him third in the NCAA. Brown also ran the 800, finishing in 1:51.83. 

In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Colquitt and Tarter finished in 17th and 19th, running times of 14.48 and 14.79 seconds, respectively. 

In the men’s 400-meter, freshman Kalen Sargent ran a new personal best time of 47.29 seconds, finishing first for the Hoosiers and 25th overall in the men’s event and 25th overall.  

In the men’s 100-meter dash, senior Trelee Banks finished in 11th with a time of 10.263. 

In 4x100-meter relay, the Indiana women’s team clocked a time of 46.23, claiming 14th. On the men’s side, finished in 40.64 seconds to secure ninth. 

To close out the meet, the men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relay teams took to the track. The women’s team finished in ninth with a time of 3 minutes, 48.97 seconds. The Hoosiers’ other women’s team finished eighth with 3:46.86. 

The men’s race saw one team represent the Hoosiers, which finished with a time of 3:14.52, earning the team 12th.  

Indiana track and field next competes at the Crimson Tide Invitational on April 10 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
