Bloomington man Shandor Jackson, 37, was arrested April 22 after a house fire the day prior left his mother in critical condition. He was charged with attempted murder, arson, aggravated assault and auto theft.
Bloomington Police Department officers responded to reports of a structure fire midday April 21 around the 2000 block of South Rogers Street. Upon arrival, they found a house nearly engulfed in flames and heard a voice inside crying out for help, a BPD press release said.
Officers kicked the door down and found Jackson’s mother on the floor surrounded by fire. She was severely injured and could not move without assistance, the release said.
BPD officers provided medical care until the Bloomington Fire Department and the Monroe Fire Protection District arrived. The woman was initially taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, then transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis. She remains in critical condition, the release said.
Police began investigating the circumstances of the fire and learned from neighbors that the 54-year-old woman lived with her son, Jackson. Both Jackson and the woman’s tan Hyundai were missing from the residence, according to the release.
According to the release, BPD used Flock camera license plate readers to identify the missing vehicle parked in a motel in Mitchell, Indiana. Officers determined Jackson rented a room at that motel and acquired a warrant to search the rooms of the motel.
Police arrested Jackson around 12:30 p.m. and interviewed him before transferring him to the Monroe County Jail.
