The following is a press release written by Jim Krause for the Backspace Gallery.
What happens when three longtime artist friends join together for an exhibition? The result is Intersections and Abstractions, a show featuring work from Bloomington artists Dale Enochs, Jim Krause and Kurt Larsen. The show features stone and metal sculptures from Dale Enochs, landscape photography and paintings by Jim Krause, and abstract paintings from Kurt Larsen. While politics aren’t the focus of the exhibit, Enochs, Krause, and Larsen are aligned with Fall of Freedom, an organization uniting artists, musicians, creators, and communities to support free speech, democracy, and immigration rights.
“In this show I’m exploring intersections of sky and water, water and land, and civilization and nature,” says Krause. “My work focuses on capturing wild places-miles from civilization. Wilderness provides a refuge, far removed from the trappings of society. All are welcome and equal, regardless of race, religion, nationality or politics. It’s interesting to consider these things alongside nature. For me, the appeal of being in the wilderness or on the water is that human constructs don’t matter.”
“Ultimately, I believe that art has the power to address people on many levels,” Enochs adds. “Art has thepotential to bring diverse images and ideas together, making them whole. Art also has the potential to bringpeople together and speak of their shared ideals. These challenges are at the heart of what motivates the workthat I do.”
Larsen shares, “I enjoy making art that attempts to honor the wonder of nature in all its glory. It’s an almost impossible task given that nature rules. It’s fun however to try and my abstract paintings attempt to imitate the vibe of it all.”
The exhibit opens at 5 PM Friday, April 3, at the Backspace Gallery, 112 W 6th Street (inside Bonne Fête) and will remain on view through the end of April. Kurt Larsen was raised and educated in California where he worked professionally creating custom faux finishes and began developing a unique style, creating portraits and abstract paintings out of oils, acrylics, and mixed media. In 1993, he moved with his wife to Bloomington to be part of the area’s creative community. Kurt continues to make art for enjoyment, commission, and to benefit not-for-profit organizations and worthy causes.
