After a long indoor season filled with records and personal bests, Indiana track and field opened its outdoor track season at the Raleigh Relays from Friday to Saturday in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Hoosiers were joined by fellow Big Ten teams Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Rutgers.

Overall, eight Hoosiers gained new personal bests in six events.

Thursday was a quiet first day of competition, but the Hoosiers still performed well. The day was highlighted by senior Makayla Hunter’s second-place finish in the women’s shot put with a throw of 16.41 meters.

On the men’s side, sophomores Seth Brosseau and Caleb Smith finished in fifth and 20th place, throwing 17.28 meters and 15.94 meters, respectively. Both marks were personal bests.

To close out the first day of competition, four Hoosiers competed in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase run. Senior Garrett Hicks placed 35th overall with a finishing time of 9:06.42, senior Nolan Satterfield finished in 47th with a time of 9:11.61, junior Cole Raymond finished 67th with a time of 9:29.48 and sophomore Caden Click finished in 71st with a time of 9:37.27.

Amid a busy Friday, Smith placed fifth in the men’s discus with a personal best throw of 52.52 meters. This throw placed him at 19th in school history for this event.

In the women’s discus, sophomore Hannah Alexander placed second overall with a throw of 51.33 meters, half a meter behind the first-place throw by University of Virginia graduate student Janae Profit.

Four Hoosiers competed in the women’s 1500-meter run. Sophomores Catie McCabe and Maddie Rocchio ran personal best times of 4:26.34 and 4:38.32, respectively. Sophomores Ellia Hayes and Jessica Hegedus finished with respective times of 4:40.31 and 4:45.91.

In the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase run, sophomores Michaela Quinn and Joey Rastrelli finished 32nd and 39th overall with finishing times of 10:38.46 and 10:48.19, respectively. Quinn’s time was a personal best.

After a weather delay, senior Claire Overfelt ran the 10,000-meter run, placing 11th with a personal best time of 33:54.52.

Moving into Saturday, three Hoosiers competed in the hammer throw. On the women’s side, junior Bridget Beyer took home 14th place with a final mark of 54.14 meters.
