Local live music: from a cappella to rock

From a cappella groups to female-fronted rock bands, there are plenty of options for any music lover to enjoy around Bloomington this week.

Wednesday 

The Orbit Room will host Just Penelope, Ione and The Knee-Hi's for a night of live music. Music will start at 7 p.m., and tickets for the all-ages show will cost $13.60 with a food or drink purchase required.

Just Penelope is a Bloomington-based band which plays indie rock music; the group has released two singles. Ione is a Chicago-based indie rock musician who has released original music. The Knee-Hi's, a female-fronted rock band based in Chicago, have released two albums along with some other singles.

Thursday 

Laid Back Country Picker will perform at the Orbit Room with opener The Hammer and The Hatchet. Music will start at 6:15 p.m., and tickets for the all-ages show will cost $24.72 with a required food or drink purchase.

Laid Back Country Picker is a Kentucky-based musician who mainly plays ‘70s guitar rock and country. The Hammer and The Hatchet is a group native to Indiana which has released four original albums.

Friday 

The Orbit Room will host an evening with Salaam. Tickets for the all-ages event will cost $11.33 with a food or drink purchase required, and the music will begin at 7 p.m. Salaam is a group which plays Middle Eastern classical music, as well as folk and original songs.

Laid Back Country Picker will perform again at the Orbit Room with The Hammer and The Hatchet. This show will start at 9 p.m. with tickets costing $22.66 and a food or drink purchase required.

Chicago-based band Rod Tuffcurls and the Bench Press will perform at The Bluebird. The 21-and-up show will start at 9 p.m., and tickets will cost $18.65. The band mostly plays pop and rock hits during its performances.

Saturday 

The IU Student Foundation will host IU Sing A Cappella at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The competition will start at 6 p.m. and will feature seven a cappella groups competing for the chance to sing at the Little 500 in April. General admission tickets cost $23.87, student tickets cost $16.69 and youth tickets for ages 12 and under cost $13.61.

Hank Ruff will perform at The Bluebird starting at 9 p.m. Tickets for his 21-and-up show will cost $12.43. Ruff is an IU alumnus who plays country music and has also released original music.
