UPDATED: College Avenue closing for 2 weeks for convention center ‘skybridge’ construction

Starting Monday night, there will be sidewalk and road closures on South College Avenue to allow for the construction of a “skybridge” walkway connecting the Bloomington Convention Center, formerly named the Monroe Convention Center, to its new expansion.

The road closure was delayed from Monday morning to Monday night due to inclement weather, according to an email from Weddle Bros. Construction Companies Project Manager Andrew Scere. The delay will allow for snow removal efforts.

The closure will be south of Third Street, according to the City of Bloomington’s inRoads website, and vehicle traffic will be rerouted to Rogers Street. Pedestrian traffic will be rerouted to Walnut Street and Second Street.

A single southbound lane will reopen to traffic Feb. 13.

Following the reopening, the eastern southbound lane of College Avenue will be closed for curb and sidewalk reconstruction through June 26.

In March 2025, the Bloomington City Council greenlit the use of $46,825,000 to renovate and expand the convention center. The expected completion date is early 2027.

The team working on expanding the convention center is also leading the closure, although the city is coordinating on detours. Crews will lift and set the skywalk above College Avenue during the closure.

UPDATE: This story has been updated to reflect a delay due to weather.
