Indiana track and field starts strong in 1st meet of season

Indiana track and field kicked off its 2026 season with the Indiana Invitational on Jan. 16-17 at Gladstein Fieldhouse. Indiana women took home first place in nine events, while the men took home seven. Nine schools from across the country competed in the invitational, and over 30 Hoosiers competed.

On the women’s side, sophomore Lyric Steele ran the 60-meter dash in 7.68 seconds, while junior Symone Adams ran a 7.81, placing them in 10th and 17th place, respectively. In the 200, sophomore Kiera Davis finished third with a time of 24.32, and freshman Omema Anyanwu placed 14th with a time of 25.86. In the 400, freshman Ava Olomajeye finished second with a time of 55.45, and freshman Kaselle Davis and junior Kristina Vincic finished seventh and eighth with times of 57.38 and 57.64, respectively. 

In the women’s 600, sophomore Veronica Hargrave won with a time of 1:28.37. Sophomore Nola Somers Glenn finished second with a time of 1:30.60. 

Sophomore Amelia Dodds won the women’s 800 with a time of 2:08.16. 

Junior Lily Myers finished second in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:42.61, while sophomores Michaela Quinn and Catie McCabe finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 4:51.44 and 4:51.68. 

In the women’s 4x400-meter relay, Indiana’s team of Ryann Parrish, Olomajeye, Dodds and Davis finished first with a time of 3:38.37, breaking the previous indoor record at Indiana by 0.2 seconds.

The Indiana women’s distance medley team of sophomore Joey Rastrelli, junior Kai Snell, freshman Ciara Kepner and freshman Ava Jarrell finished second with a time of 11:53.15. 

In women’s triple jump, senior Kelly Moran finished first in the group with a mark of 12.73 meters. Sophomore Hannah Alexander finished first in women’s weight throw with a mark of 19.13 meters. 

In the women's indoor pentathlon, freshman Chayla Rankin scored 3,694 points in women’s indoor pentathlon, earning a first-place finish. In the 800-meter run, she posted a time of 2:23.51. She ran a 9.09 in the women’s 60-meter hurdles and finished first in the group in the high jump with a mark of 1.70 meters. She finished first in the group in long jump with a distance of 5.49 meters. She finished second in shot put with a distance of 9.16 meters.

On the men’s track side, junior Jasiah Rogers won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.72, while  senior Trelee Banks-Rose finished third with a time of 6.73.

In the men’s 600, senior Camden Marshall finished first with a time of 1:17.14, while sophomore Daquan Tate finished fourth with 1:20.02.

Junior Andrew Mangum won the men’s 1-mile run with a time of 3:59.63. He is just the 14th Hoosier ever to run a sub-four minute mile. Seniors Abe Eckman and Nico Colchico finished second and third with times of 4:03.51 and 4:06.06, respectively.

Senior John Colquitt won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95. 

In the men’s 4x400-meter relay, Indiana’s Colquitt, Kalen Sargent, Cameron Mullens and Tate finished second with a time of 3:10.96. 

Junior Lee Martin finished second in men’s high jump with a mark of 2.05 meters, while freshman Jay Hmurovich finished third with a mark of 2.00 meters.

In the men's pole vault, senior Tyler Carrel won with a mark of 5.45 meters. Senior Alex Smith won the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.29.

Senior Hunter Smith won the men’s weight throw with a mark of 20.28 meters. 

Next up, Indiana is set to compete in the Crossroads of America Invitational on Jan. 23-24 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. After that, the Louisville and Meyo Invitationals will take place Jan. 30-31 in Louisville, Kentucky, and South Bend, Indiana.
