Local live music this week: holiday shows galore

Escape the cold and bring on the holiday cheer this week with live music and many festive performances. From jazz bands to a cappella ensembles, here’s what is happening in the Bloomington music scene this week. 

Tuesday 

The IU auditorium will host Mannheim Steamroller Christmas. The Mannheim Steamrollers are a music group that blends classical, rock and electronic sounds. The holiday show will feature 15 musicians playing over 20 instruments and will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the performance will range from $59 to $80 depending on seats at the IU Auditorium. 

Wednesday 

Juniper Art Gallery on Kirkwood Avenue will host The Wreckers of Romance Wreck the Holidays! from 6 -7:30 p.m. for an evening of acoustic holiday music. The Wreckers of Romance are a Bloomington-based music duo who love country music, according to their Instagram. The holiday event at Juniper Art Gallery will be free to attend. 

El Mantis, a psychedelic jazz band from Texas, will play at the Orbit Room with a local quartet consisting of Hazel Benton, Norbert Herber, Ben Meyers and Kyle Quass as the openers. Doors for the all-ages show will open at 6 p.m. with tickets costing $11.33.  

County music artist and IU alumnus Hank Ruff will play at The Bluebird. The show will start at 10 p.m., and tickets cost $14.25. Ruff will play some of his original country musicat the 21-and-up venue. 

Thursday 

Straight No Chaser, the a cappella group that got its start at IU, will perform a holiday-themed show at the IU Auditorium. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. with tickets ranging from $34 to $88 depending on seating. 

Friday 

Cover band Rod Tuffcurls and the Bench Press will play a Taylor Swift tribute show called Tuff Taylor at The Bluebird. The 21-and-up show starts at 9 p.m., with tickets costing $27.46.  

IU’s all-male a cappella group Another Round will have its annual holiday show at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The show will begin at 8 p.m., with tickets ranging from $14 to $26 depending on seating.  

Saturday 

Indie rock band Six Foot Blonde, which got its start at IU, will play at The Bluebird, with current IU student band Opal as the opener. The show will begin at 9 p.m. at the 21-and-up venue, and tickets will cost $14.25. 

The Jon McLaughlin & Friends: Home for the Holidays show will take place at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater from 7-8:30 p.m. McLaughlin, an Indiana native, is known for his pop rock music, and Saturday’s show will include holiday songs and Christmas classics. The show will also feature musical collaborators like Kris AllenDavid Davis and Morgan James. Ticket prices will span from $36 to $52 depending on seating at the theater.
