Thanksgiving break is a great time to put work away and have fun with friends and family. If you’re looking for things to do to pass the time, going to the movies is a great option, and there are plenty of new films coming to theaters next week. Here’s a list of five movies to get you out of your house during break.
The much-anticipated continuation of the film adaptation of "Wicked" is finally hitting theaters Nov. 21. The film uncovers the hidden story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda (Ariana Grande), the Good Witch of the North. This sequel picks up with the downfall of Elphaba as the city of Oz turns on her and ties in the classic story of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," revealing what actually happened behind the scenes.
If you watched the first movie and enjoyed it, this will be a must-see to experience the rest of the story. If you have yet to watch the first part, I highly recommend giving it a shot before the sequel comes out. I’ve heard of many people who aren’t musical fans who ended up loving this film despite going into it with doubts.
I even dragged my parents to go see the first film assuming they would hate it but, to my surprise, they really enjoyed it and are now willingly accompanying me to see the sequel. I personally am very excited to see this continuation and am fully ready to be sobbing in the theater as soon as they start singing “For Good.”
Phillip (Brendan Fraser), a struggling actor in Tokyo, ends up working for a “rental family” agency, an unusual business where actors stand in for family members. As he navigates the challenges of stepping into different roles in strangers’ lives, he discovers purpose and uncovers the importance of human connection.
If you're a fan of heartfelt movies exploring the complexities of humanity and relationships, this could be a good film for you. While it might be more on the genuine and grounded side, it is advertised as having comedic elements as well, so it should be an enjoyable film. The movie is set to release Nov. 21.
Following the events of “Sisu,” Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila), an ex-Finnish Army commando, returns to Soviet-occupied Karelia in 1946 with the mission of tearing his family’s home down to rebuild it somewhere safe. However, the Red Army soon discovers his presence and sets off to kill him by whatever means necessary.
Fans of the first film will most likely not want to miss the sequel, but if you’ve never seen the original, it may be a good franchise to get into for fans of action-packed films rooted in historical events. The first film is currently available to watch for free on Tubi, so it’s a perfect time to dive into these films. “Sisu: Road to Revenge” is coming to theaters Nov. 21.
Returning to Zootopia almost 10 years after the original film was released, this sequel follows detectives Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) as they are met with a new case involving a mysterious snake, Gary (Ke Huy Quan).
I am a huge fan of “Zootopia,” so I was so excited to hear that Disney was making a sequel. While it’s still unclear if this film will do the original justice, I am thrilled to see the sequel and dive back into the world of Zootopia. This would be a great film for those looking for an excursion for the whole family, but if you’re like me, this film will be a hit no matter your age. The movie will hit theaters Nov. 26.
“Eternity”
This rom-com follows Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) after she dies and is sent to the afterlife. Here, she must choose who she will spend eternity with: the man she spent the majority of her life with or her first love.
This would be a good film if you're looking for something more lighthearted for the holidays. While the main premise revolves around death, the film seems to keep it lighthearted, leaning into the comedic. This could be a great choice for a date night, though it's also great for anyone looking for some fun with a side of Miles Teller. This movie will be coming to theaters Nov. 26.
