Former Indiana volleyball assistant coach Brett Agne received a two-year show-cause penalty for placing around $327,000 in impermissible bets on professional and collegiate athletics during his time with the Hoosiers, according to an agreement released Tuesday.
The Division I Committee on Infractions determined Ange’s case is a Level II-Standard.
During a five-month period, Agne placed more than 700 bets — 27 of which were placed on Indiana football or men’s basketball — totaling up to $327,000 on online betting platforms. New NCAA rules no longer prohibit student athletes or athletic staff from betting on professional sports, but the rules still prohibit betting on collegiate sports. However, Agne’s bets were placed before those new rules went into effect Nov. 22.
“Agne stated that he used an unregulated computer program to place bets on games automatically based on an algorithm, and as a result, he was not aware of which games he was betting on — including the Indiana games,” the release said.
During his time with Indiana, Agne held multiple positions. He joined the Indiana coaching staff in 2021 as the Hoosiers’ technical coordinator. He was named director of operations ahead of the 2022 season before he was elevated to assistant coach and technical coordinator in 2023.Agne is now an assistant coach with Indy Ignite, a Major League Volleyball team.
Agne admitted he knew he was violating NCAA ethical conduct rules, according to the release.
An IU spokesperson did not respond to comment by the time of publication. An Indy Ignite spokesperson said the team is aware of the report, but had no further comment.
The panel determined three penalties for Agne. Along with his two-year show-cause penalty, Agne will serve a 10 regular-season game suspension in which he cannot participate in any coaching activities, and a public reprimand and censure.
