It took 13 games for Indiana field hockey to play in its first overtime or shootout game. The Hoosiers defeated then-No. 10 Maryland 2-1 on Oct. 17 in a shootout. However, it took Indiana only two games to get its second extra-time victory. On Friday, Indiana got the job done in the first overtime period, defeating No. 18 Ohio State 2-1.

“We definitely felt like ‘okay, we’ve been here just recently,’” Indiana head coach Kayla Bashore said postgame. “They knew how to control the pace. They knew how to attack when they needed to attack. It was helpful that we had Maryland just a week ago.”

The game-winning goal came from sophomore forward Mijntje Hagen in the 65th minute. Even though the Hoosiers got outshot 12-9 by Ohio State, sophomore goalkeeper Sadie Canelli stepped up in big-time moments to finish the contest with eight saves. The mark tied her career high from a 2-0 win to then-No. 18 University of California, Berkeley last season on Oct. 18, 2024.

“She won it for us,” Bashore said. “They have so many offensive threats and the ability for her to absorb that and to make just really great saves today.”

Indiana entered the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll for the first time this season at No. 20. Along with national recognition, the three-game win streak for the Hoosiers moves them to a 3-3 Big Ten record.

The pressure from Ohio State gave Indiana some trouble in the first quarter. The Buckeyes received a penalty corner in the fourth minute, but a shot from senior back Katie Fichtner went wide. Ohio State thought it got its first goal in the eighth minute after graduate forward Makenna Webster’s shot found the back of the net. However, the score was overturned after a review by the officials.

Indiana received its first penalty in the 13th minute after a referral by the Buckeyes was upheld. Hagen — who finished the game with a team-high three shots — was able to find space for an attempt, but her shot went wide left.

Indiana received a penalty corner to open the second quarter, but the Hoosiers could not score on their chances. With Indiana retaining possession, a pass from Hagen bounced around in front of the goal before freshman forward Celia Arroyo Cabezudo put the ball into the back of the net. The goal improved her total scores this season to a team-high seven.

The 1-0 Indiana lead lasted less than three minutes. Webster scored her 18th goal this season for the Buckeyes in the 21st minute. Her takeaway in the Indiana shooting circle allowed Webster to place the ball over Canelli’s shoulder.

Ohio State kept on attacking the Indiana defense through the second quarter. The Buckeyes outshot Indiana 6-4 and had one more penalty corner during the period. Their attempts culminated in a 27th-minute penalty stroke by Webster. However, the usually sure-handed Webster went wide of the goal on her attempt.

Coming out of halftime, only Ohio State had a shot in the third quarter. Canelli saved the attempt by junior forward Emily Barker in the 33rd minute. Both teams received green cards in the frame — with senior back Emma Thompson drawing the two-minute penalty for Indiana in the 38th minute — but no team capitalized on the advantage.

By the fourth quarter, the Hoosiers turned more aggressive. Hagen’s attempt in the 50th minute was stopped by Ohio State sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Stevens, who finished the game with four saves. Freshman forward Molly Stutte’s shot in the 60th minute off a penalty corner bounced up and hit the post with 40 seconds remaining on the clock.

“We just keep working hard,” Hagen said. “As long as we protect our own goal, it’s easier to score on the other. Keeping working hard as a team and be confident too.”

Indiana fans held their breath to start the first seven-on-seven overtime period after Ohio State received two penalty corners and produced three shots. However, Canelli stood firm in net during the chances in the 63rd and 64th minutes. After the third save, junior midfielder Anne Marie Krebs received her second green card of the game.

Indiana attacked quickly on the advantage, and the aggressiveness paid off in the 65th minute. Sophomore forward Charlotte Glasper inserted the penalty corner to junior midfielder Inés Garcia Prado. Using Garcia Prado’s pass, Hagen was able to get the ball past Stevens for the win.

“We’re happy about it, but like, we’re not satisfied,” Garcia Prado said. “We want more. So right now, we’re celebrating, but like, not too much. We’re just rolling right now.”

Indiana returns to Deborah Tobias Field at noon on Sunday for Senior Day against Michigan State. The Spartans are coming off a 6-0 loss to No. 10 Iowa on Thursday. With two games remaining on their schedule, the Hoosiers find themselves in the middle of the Big Ten standings.

“We’re not trying to look at two games. We’re looking at this next game,” Bashore said. “Making sure you’re doing the role that you’re supposed to do while you’re on. Take it small steps at a time.”
