The Bloomington Police Department arrested Stephen E. Walker, 34, on Thursday on charges of possession of child pornography, a level five felony.
Walker is one of five Bloomington Board of Public Safety members, and he’s attended all of the board’s meetings since July.
Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson appointed Walker in June and he has since been removed from the board, Bloomington Communications Director Desiree DeMolina said in an email to the Indiana Daily Student. Bloomington does not conduct criminal background checks for board appointments, and Walker did not have a prior criminal record, DeMolina said.
The Board of Public Safety oversees the city’s police and fire departments.
Walker also has worked for the Indiana Department of Correction for about nine years, according to a recording from a July board meeting.
Walker’s arrest resulted from an investigation that began in Boston earlier this year. Another unnamed individual was found sharing child pornography online with a recipient investigators determined was Walker, BPD Captain Ryan Pedigo said in an email.
After being located by officers Thursday morning, Walker was taken into custody without incident, the email said.
“What is important now is accountability,” DeMolina said in the email. “In Bloomington, it does not matter who you are or what role you hold. When individuals do harm or act unlawfully, they are held responsible. That is the expectation in Bloomington and will not change.”
