Two men were charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury after an assault was reported to the Bloomington Police Department at 11:35 p.m. Sept. 26 on the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, according to an email from BPD Captain Ryan Pedigo.

The assault involved several other men, and more arrests are possible, according to the email.

Officers arrived at the scene and met with the victim, who had visible face injuries including missing teeth, according to the email. The man initially refused to cooperate with the investigation and told responding officers that no fight had occurred.

Officers reviewed cell phone footage from several witnesses which showed two men involved in the physical altercation were armed with handguns but did not use them in the assault. Police later identified them as two Bloomington residents, 25-year-old Avery Williams and 21-year-old Khalil Morris.

Around 1:15 a.m. Sept. 27, officers located Williams and Morris inside Five Guys on Kirkwood Avenue. Officers took statements from the two men, but they were released due to the victim’s decision not to pursue charges.

On Monday, the victim provided a statement about the fight and chose to pursue criminal charges. He reported he was involved in a verbal argument with Williams and Morris after he believed one of them may have stolen his phone. The argument led to a physical altercation between the three men.

Williams and Morris were located and transported to the Monroe County Jail. They will remain in custody on battery charges resulting in serious bodily injury.
