This spring semester, 18 IU student organizations faced disciplinary statuses. Of these organizations, 11 had statuses related to hazing.
Other common violations leading to discipline include violations relating to alcohol, endangering others, sexual harassment and failing to comply with Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life or IU policies.
According to the Office of Student Life list of organizations on disciplinary status, 10 organizations had violations related to alcohol, seven related to endangering others, four for sexual harassment and five for failure to comply with university and OSFL policies.
Three organizations had instances of dishonest conduct, two for lewd and indecent conduct and two for retaliation.
In March, IU’s Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association temporarily paused all social events from early March until after spring break, citing community health and safety concerns. The IFC and PHA represent 49 fraternities and sororities.
Hazing is “strictly prohibited” at IU, according to the Office of Student Life. It defines hazing as “any conduct that subjects another person, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically, to anything that may endanger, abuse, degrade, or intimidate the person as a condition of association with a group or organization, regardless of the person’s consent or lack of consent.”
Eight organizations were suspended in previous semesters and continued their suspension into the spring, according to the list of organizations on disciplinary status. These organizations are Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, Phi Kappa Sigma, Phi Kappa Tau and Tau Kappa Epsilon.
There are two organizations — Beta Sigma Psi and Sigma Chi — on cease and desist. Beta Sigma Psi was placed on cease and desist Feb. 28 for alcohol and endangering others, while Sigma Chi received the designation Nov. 5, 2024, for hazing.
Phi Sigma Kappa entered a voluntary resolution agreement May 2 with the Office of Student Conduct to “resolve a matter regarding Alcohol and Failure to Comply with OSFL Policies,” according to the Office of Student Life list of organizations on disciplinary status.
Five organizations are on disciplinary probation: Alpha Kappa Psi, Beta Sigma Psi, Beta Theta Pi, the Indian Student Association and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
Several other organizations were on disciplinary statuses earlier this semester but no longer carry these designations. Alpha Kappa Lambda entered a voluntary agreement to resolve issues surrounding alcohol Feb. 27 to April 10. Alpha Omicron Pi similarly entered a voluntary resolution for alcohol violations from March 14 to April 4. Sigma Alpha Epsilon entered a voluntary resolution Jan. 24 to March 24 for issues regarding alcohol, endangering others and failing to comply with IU policies. Sigma Delta Tau also entered a voluntary resolution March 4 through April 6 regarding hazing.
During the fall 2024, 20 IU student organizations were on disciplinary statuses, 15 of which faced hazing violations.
