UPDATE: ICE detains Mexican citizen after arrest at justice center

Federal agents arrested 36-year-old Martin Cortez-Lopez at the Charlotte Zietlow Justice Center who was wanted on a federal warrant Tuesday morning.

The Herald Times first reported the arrest, originally reported as an FBI apprehension outside the justice center.

Cortez-Lopez was deported by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in 2011 because of convictions in Florida that included resisting a police officer with violence, possession of a controlled substance and disorderly public intoxication.

Fingerprints taken and entered into a national database alerted ICE officials he had re-entered the U.S.

The warrant used was issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

Since entering the U.S. again, Cortez-Lopez was arrested twice in Monroe County last year. One in February was for allegedly driving while intoxicated and possessing cocaine and the other in June for driving while intoxicated, endangering a person and possession of cocaine.

He was apprehended after a court hearing Tuesday where he was scheduled to plead guilty under terms of an agreement between the prosecutor and public defender.

A previous press release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said it was not involved in the arrest. The FBI did not send any information on the arrest to the Indiana Daily Student, but confirmed it was the agency that arrested an individual at the justice center.

Cortez-Lopez was taken into federal custody and there will be a court hearing to review his case.

UPDATE: This story was updated to include additional information on the arrest, first reported by The Herald Times.
