Indiana football QB Kurtis Rourke out vs. Washington with hand injury

Indiana football sixth-year senior quarterback Kurtis Rourke will not play in the Hoosiers Oct. 26 contest against Washington, a source confirmed to the Indiana Daily Student on Sunday.

Rourke suffered a thumb injury in Indiana's 56-7 win over Nebraska on Saturday. He did not play in the second half and was replaced by redshirt sophomore Tayven Jackson.

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti was initially optimistic about Rourke's status moving forward. The Hoosiers are still expecting Rourke to return this season.

In his one half of play, Rourke threw for 189 yards on 17-of-21 attempts for one touchdown. His only blemish came from a Hail Mary interception just before the half ended, as Indiana carried a 28-7 lead.

Jackson finished the game 7 for 8 for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Cignetti said while Jackson still has to practice better, it’s difficult to be the backup due to the lack of available practice reps and the frequent addition of new offensive layers — and Jackson performed well with his opportunity.

“I thought he went in there and did a good job,” Cignetti said postgame. “I had confidence. Team had confidence. I was proud of him.”
