Eight cooling stations in Bloomington and Ellettsville will be open for residents 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 16-23 in Monroe County due to an incoming heat wave, where temperatures will be in the mid-90s. The heat wave is expected to last until Thursday.
The eight cooling stations’ locations are listed below:
- Bloomington Fire Station 1: 226 S. College Ave.
- Ellettsville Fire Department Headquarters: 5080 W. State Road 46
- Monroe Fire Protection District Station 22: Perry: 3953 S. Kennedy Drive
- Monroe Fire Protection District Station 21: Clear Creek: 9094 S. Strain Ridge Road
- Monroe Fire Protection District Station 23: Indian Creek: 8019 S. Rockport Road
- Monroe Fire Protection District Station 25: Bloomington: 5081 N. Old State Road 37
- Monroe Fire Protection District Station 29: Van Buren: 2130 S. Kirby Road
- Monroe Fire Protection District Station 24: Benton: 7606 E. State Road 45
Additionally, Bryan Park and Mills Pools will allow free admission this summer when the National Weather Service heat risk is category two or above, according to a press release.
Heat risk category two, which is considered moderate, affects people sensitive to heat, including those without adequate cooling or hydration.
According to the release, the county’s expected extreme heat conditions can pose serious health risks to older adults, young children, infants, people with chronic illnesses and those without sufficient cooling in their living spaces.
The World Health Organization recommends avoiding going outside for strenuous activity during the hottest times of the day and utilizing shade as much as possible.
Monroe County residents can monitor the temperatures through local weather channels and the NWS website.
