Lilly’s Local Tunes: A guide to live music events March 27-30

entlillylocaltunes-illo

Welcome back to the weekend show guide!

For this guide, I included a show on Wednesday I felt was too important not to make the weekend cut, as well as exciting shows from the usual music venues. As we approach warmer months, take a break from finals prep and worrying about the end of the semester with some live music.

Wednesday

Voices of Youth Revolution presented by WFHB Youth Radio will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. at The Orbit Room. Youth Revolution is a collection of teenagers who write, arrange and perform their own original music in Bloomington. The night will serve as a showcase for their original work and will be recorded live for replay on WFHB.

The night will feature The Sera-Tones, an all-girl indie rock trio that originated from a Girls Rock Bloomington summer camp band. They have released an EP titled “Happy but Alone” and have played Bloomington’s Granfalloon and the Russian Recording 20th anniversary festival.

Thursday

The local R&B girl group Yours Truly will take the stage at 10 p.m. at The Bluebird Nightclub. Tickets are $10 for this 21+ event.

The Blockhouse Bar will host their Blues Jam at 8 p.m. which will showcase featured blues artists.

Student-run music festival Culture Shock presented by WIUX will announce this year’s lineup at an Artist Party at 7 p.m. at the I Fell Gallery. There will be music, refreshments, and an art exhibition. Admission is free, and you can RSVP here.

Ian Nagoski of Canary Records will be featured for a “DJ and Music Talk” presented by TD’s CD’s + LP’s from 7-10 p.m. at The Orbit Room. Canary Records founder and archivist Ian Nagoski will share music from 1928-52 from around the Midwest as well as personal stories from his time in the industry. This is a free event, but donations are encouraged.

Friday

Local heavy metal and hard rock bands Fantastic Shams, Foxbody, Hoodwink and Jessica Albatross will perform at 8 p.m. at The Blockhouse Bar. Admission is $8 for this 21+ show.

Oso Blues Trio will perform at 6 p.m. at The Orbit Room. This show celebrates the release of their latest single “Angels.” Tickets are $7 for this all-ages event.

Saturday

The beloved Bloomington indie band 6 Foot Blonde will perform at 9 p.m. at The Bluebird. Tickets are $10 for this 21+ event.

Yellow Rain will perform a record release show for their debut double LP, “Generation Dead” at 10 p.m. at The Bishop. The night will also feature music from ADD/C with Hyper Tensions, Crab Jackson and The Marginal Contact. Admission is $10 for this 21+ event.

In celebration of its tenth anniversary and to raise funds to keep hosting shows, The Blockhouse is hosting a “Fund-Rager” from 4-11:50 p.m. Enjoy a night filled with music, merchandise and popcorn from local artists and vendors. Donations of at least $15 are expected to enter. There will also be karaoke to close out the exciting night.

The Fund-Rager will feature local musicians including Busman’s Holiday, Alex Swartzentruber, Crescent Ulmer, Sherrod Woods, Honky Tonk House Band, Dead Country, Kay Krull, Milkwood and Sumatics.

Tom Roznowski and Carolyn Dutton perform an acoustic “Songs & Storytelling” show at 6 p.m. at The Orbit Room. Roznowski has amassed a variety of work including three acoustic albums, as well as short stories, essays and other writings. In addition to music, he hosts “PorchLight,” an hour-long music show Saturdays at 6 p.m. on WFIU and Sundays at 6 p.m. on WFIU 2.

Dutton serves as vice president for Jazz from Bloomington, a non-profit organization, and is an accomplished violinist, writer and folk musician.
