Indiana men’s soccer senior defender and captain Joey Maher was awarded Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. The award marks Maher’s first career Big Ten weekly award.

The captain starred in the shutout win over the University of Evansville on Oct. 11, limiting the Purple Aces to just five shot attempts. Maher also played a significant role in Indiana’s hard-fought triumph over Ohio State on Oct. 15, scoring a goal and helping hold the Buckeyes to only nine shot attempts.

This season, Maher has started every game, and as Indiana has allowed eight goals in 13 matches. The Hoosiers stand in ninth place nationally for the least goals conceded per game.

The defender has 74 career appearances for Indiana, helping keep 37 clean sheets so far.
