COLUMN: ‘The Bachelor’ week 4: it’s valen-time!

It’s bachelor Monday already! I hope you all enjoyed an episode filled with SPF, shellfish and lovely miscommunication.

Week four

We start the episode off with — cue the squeals — finding out they are finally getting out of the mansion and heading to the Bahamas. Apparently, host Jesse Palmer thinks this is the most romantic place in the world. I might have to disagree. As Jesse lets the women know they only have one hour to pack, yeah right, — you may have guessed it — the squeals get even louder.

Let’s jump right to the women screaming “Zach” over the balcony and the amazing resort promo that we seem to get in every shot. The date card announces that the first date of the week goes to Kat. As everyone stares her down, Kat leaves the resort on a yacht with Zach. Oh, but you can’t forget the sunscreen, or as Zach calls it, “SPF’ing you.” I was uncomfortable. I literally jumped in my seat as they showed the underwater sculptures in the ocean as they scuba dove— I totally thought Zach was posing. I feel like he would do that, though.

At the evening portion of their date, Kat opens up to Zach about her negative relationship with her mom and her hopes to have a positive family dynamic in her future. Zach was unbelievably supportive and receptive, ultimately deciding to give her the rose. But let’s not forget how Zach “perfectly” timed saying “it was like fireworks” just as fireworks went off... mm-hmm.

During the group date for the week — which consisted of 12 of the women — the women and Zach explored the island with a lot of shellfish and dancing. Zach let us know his “hips don’t like.” I'll just leave that there.

The women all had a “pack” to evenly distribute Zach — like, okay, he's not a cake — but Anastasia decided to disown the pack and steal Zach more times than she was, I guess, allowed. Let’s cue up the side eyes real quick.

Kylee, someone who I didn’t even know was on the show until this very moment, decided to interrupt Anastasia and Zach. Awkwardly standing two feet away from them acting as if they both didn’t notice her, Anastasia asks Kylee if she could have two more minutes talking to him, to which Kylee responded saying, “I’m not going to fight.” Most would assume she meant to fight about the situation; however, Anastasia proceeds to tell everyone Kylee wanted to physically fight her. I literally sighed out loud.

During the evening portion of the group date, I started zoning out until I heard “not here for the right reasons.” That’s when you know it's going to be good. Kylee proceeded to inform Zach how she overheard Anastasia talking about how she was going to gain followers. Pulling Anastasia aside, Zach lets her know “he needs time to think.” Clearly, he needed a long time to think because we never got an answer during that date.

For the final date of the week, Brooklyn goes on a one-on-one with Zach. During the evening portion of the date, Brooklyn talks about her abusive past relationships and how that shaped her into the woman she is today. Zach was extremely receptive and supportive, leading him to give Brooklyn a rose.

We have finally reached the cocktail party. Zach dramatically walks in, saying he trusts his gut and immediately pulls Anastasia aside. I honestly don’t know if she sent herself home or if he sent her home, but either way, Zach dramatically walks her down the staircase that just so happens to be right in front of all the women. Throughout the night, Kylee is visibly upset for being the reason Anastasia went home — but what did she expect?

Before the rose ceremony, Kylee almost self-eliminates herself, but after a dramatic commercial break she seems to be perfectly fine — probably because the producers told her she was getting a rose. Kylee received the final rose of the evening, leaving Zach to send home Genevieve and Davia, both of which I couldn’t even point out in the crowd of women.

But let's just say — for Gabi’s sake — I can only hope next week will have less shellfish and drama, of course. From the looks of the previews for next week, that doesn’t seem to be the case. As for the drama part, I think we are in the clear in terms of shellfish.

See you next week in London — with Zach on Zoom? I know that's going to be some good drama... or just really good editing by the producers.
