A man was arrested in connection to the New Year’s Day stabbing of a 32-year-old man in the 200 block of South College Avenue in Bloomington.

Ryan Johnson, 36, was arrested Jan. 7 and charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery with a deadly weapon, according to a release from Bloomington Police Department Captain Ryan Pedigo. All charges are felonies.

The victim encountered Johnson around 10 p.m. Dec. 31, 2022, while walking to a bar, according to the release. The victim asked Johnson if he could touch his hair, and did so after Johnson said no. The two shared a verbal exchange before the victim apologized, and they both left.

At around 1:20 a.m. Johnson bumped into the victim while walking past him in a nearby alleyway. The man started feeling pain in his abdomen, and realized he had been stabbed, according to the release. He walked towards College Avenue and asked a bystander to call 911. The bystander reported that he had seen a man matching Johnson’s description holding a knife.
