Indiana women’s tennis continued its successful start to the season over the weekend at the Indiana Invitational and extended its win streak to five matches. The team welcomed two opponents, Western Michigan University and Bellarmine University, for a pair of matches on Saturday.

The Hoosiers completed a clean sweep, defeating Western Michigan 5-0 and Bellarmine 4-0.

On Saturday morning, Indiana faced Western Michigan for the first match of the day. The Hoosiers jumped out to a strong start, winning the first two doubles matches to capture the doubles point.

Sophomore Laura Masic and redshirt freshman Lara Schneider took care of the first match for the Hoosiers, beating Broncos seniors Femke Tjon-A-Joe and Kristina Tiraspolsky 6-4 in a close affair. In the second doubles match, juniors Alexandra Staiculescu and Mila Mejic clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win. The result marks the third match in a row in which the Hoosiers captured the doubles point.

From there, the Hoosiers seemed to be in cruise control, winning every match in the singles competitions for a 5-0 win over the Broncos.

Western Michigan and Bellarmine played each other in between both of Indiana’s matches to allow each team to play enough matches in the round-robin format, which ultimately decided the winner of the event.

The Hoosiers kicked off their second match of the day against the Bellarmine Knights later in the evening.

The Hoosiers captured the doubles point for a fourth-straight match after winning the first two matches with a score of 6-1 and 6-2. Mejic and Staiculescu paired up in the first doubles match for their second win of the day, while junior Rose Hu and Schneider competed together in the second match.

Indiana’s momentum couldn’t be stopped once again, as it swept Bellarmine with a final score of 4-0.

Although Indiana won every match of the day, six different matches between both of its opponents were ruled as unfinished for undisclosed reasons. Bellarmine forfeited the sixth singles match of the day due to a lack of available players, while the third and final doubles match against Indiana was ruled as no result.

After combining for a 9-0 mark between its two wins, Indiana is now 5-1 this season. The Hoosiers will travel to the University of Kentucky to face off against the Wildcats at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Lexington, Kentucky.
