Charlton Warren, Indiana football’s defensive coordinator in 2021, joined the University of North Carolina’s staff as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach, according to a North Carolina press release Saturday.

Warren spent one season as Indiana’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach after being hired from the University of Georgia in January 2021. Indiana’s defense allowed 384 yards per game and 33.3 points per game in Warren’s tenure.

Previously, Warren served as the defensive backs coach at North Carolina in 2015-16 under then-defensive coordinator Gene Chizik. North Carolina announced Chizik would serve as the team’s assistant head coach for defense alongside Warren.

In 2019, Warren helped lead a Georgia defense that led the nation in scoring defense with 12.6 points per game and rushing defense with 74.9 yards per game.

Warren also coached cornerbacks at the University of Florida in 2018 and coached the University of Tennessee’s defensive backs in 2017. Warren was named the 18th-best recruiter in the country for the 2020 class by 24/7 Sports.

The Hoosiers will also look to fill a defensive line coaching position after Kevin Peoples was hired by the University of Missouri on Friday. Peoples spent two years as Indiana’s defensive lines coach.
