USA Swimming announced that both IU swimming head coach Ray Looze and head diving coach Drew Johansen will join Team USA’s coaching staff for the 2020 Olympic Games in  Tokyo. Looze will serve as an assistant swimming coach, while Johansen will be the head coach of the U.S. Olympic Diving Team.

Looze recently finished his 18th season with the Hoosiers, 16 of which he has been the head coach for both the men’s and women’s swimming programs. Johansen has spent eight seasons at IU as the head diving coach after joining the program in 2013.

Looze was the assistant coach for the women’s Olympic team at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. He has also coached at the 2015 World University Games, 2014 FINA SC World Championships, 2011 Duel in the Pool and 2009 World University Games.

This is Johansen’s third-consecutive time as the head coach of the Olympic diving team. Between the Olympic Games London 2012 and Olympic Games Rio 2016, the United States has brought home one gold, three silver and three bronze medals in diving.

IU will send eleven current or former collegiate athletes to the Olympics for the second time in a row, with five qualifying over the eight-day Olympic trials from June 13-20. Lilly King, her training partner Annie Lazor, Zach Apple, Blake Pieroni and Michael Brinegar each placed second or higher in their events to earn a spot on the Team USA roster. Three of the five qualified in diving events and were led by Johansen.

The 2020 Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan and begin on July 23.
