Former University of Southern California running back Stephen Carr is transferring to IU ahead of his fifth collegiate season, he announced Sunday on Twitter.

Carr, a five-star prospect and the number three running back recruit in the nation in the 247Sports composite rankings in 2017, rushed for 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns in four seasons with the Trojans. Carr made six starts for USC and appeared in 35 games from 2017 through 2020.

IU running backs coach and associate head coach Deland McCullough was USC’s running backs coach during Carr’s freshman year in 2017, a season in which he was named honorable mention All-Pac 12.

Carr joins a backfield that features junior Sampson James and sophomore Tim Baldwin Jr., both of whom backed up Stevie Scott III in 2020. Scott signed an undrafted free agent deal with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints earlier this month.

IU opens its 2021 football season Sept. 4 against Iowa at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa.
