Comedian Carmen Lynch will headline Bloomington’s Comedy Attic this weekendat 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Lynch has appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman," “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “Conan,” and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.” Her comedy album “Dance Like You Don’t Need the Money” was voted the No. 1 comedy album in 2017 by SiriusXM.

This will be her third show at the Comedy Attic.

“What I love about the Comedy Attic is that your audiences are very open and liberal,” Lynch said. “I feel very safe crossing the line there because everybody knows it's just comedy.”

Much of her comedy comes from her own beliefs, she said. She often discusses race and religion onstage.

“I just look for what I'm thinking and feeling,” Lynch said. “That keeps it personal and original to me.”

One of Lynch’s more recent endeavors includes performing comedy for Spanish-speaking audiences. Lynch spent part of her childhood in Spain and is fluent in the language. When she returns to visit family there, she performs.

“It’s a new challenge,” Lynch said. “Every joke translates differently. Some of them don’t work there, and some of them work better.”

Comedy Attic owner Jared Thompson said Carmen’s laid-back stage presence is one of the reasons that he is excited to have her perform.

“Sometimes comedians get mad at an audience because they don’t think they are reacting the way that they should,” Thompson said. “Carmen makes the audience adjust to her.”

Thompson said he also thinks Carmen has important messages for male audiences.

“It's very rare for a man to listen to a woman for an hour without talking,” Thompson said.

Thompson said he finds it very powerful for men to have to listen to women through comedy.

“A huge percentage of great comics are women," Thompson said. "A lot of places don’t give them a fair amount of time on stage.”

As a female comedian, Lynch said she appreciates being able to watch other female comedians achieve success, Lynch said.

“When a female comedian blows up, it speaks for all women,” Lynch said. “It is a door that more women are continuing to push through.”

Lynch said she plans to release another comedy album in 2020.

Lynch can be found on all social media @CarmenComedian and at carmenlynch.com for upcoming tour dates and other information.

Tickets can be purchased online on the Comedy Attic website prior to the performance.
