Woman attempts to flee Rural King with cart full of unpurchased items

A 44-year-old woman was taken to the hospital by police Friday night after she allegedly attempted to steal roughly $210 worth of items from Rural King.

Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Brandon Siniard said the suspect arrived at Rural King around 6:15 p.m. A Royal King employee told police she grabbed a sack of free popcorn and began concealing items on her person. She also filled a cart full of items.

The employee told police the woman tried to exit Rural King with the cart around 6:30 p.m. without paying and was detained by a loss-prevention employee.

Siniard said the items on the woman and in the cart totaled $209.99 and included two back scratchers, drinks, food and sunglasses. All items were returned to Rural King.

Police determined the woman was too intoxicated to go immediately to Monroe County Correctional Facility, and she was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital where doctors also determined the suspect was too intoxicated for transport, Siniard said.

The suspect will be charged with theft and taken to jail after being discharged from IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
