Alleged thief falls out of window at IU Zeta Beta Tau house

A 21-year-old IU student fell out of a second story window Monday at the Zeta Beta Tau house.

Sergio Aguilar, the man who fell out of the window, was arrested after the incident for alleged theft of a hockey jersey.

The fraternity was having a large event that day. Aguilar was not on the guest list for the event but got into the house anyway, police said.

Police responded to the scene around 5 p.m. Aguilar called the ambulance himself after the incident, complaining about lower back pain. Police said he smelled of alcohol and appeared disoriented when they arrived.

IU Police Department Capt. Craig Munroe said police spoke to a man who claimed Aguilar had stolen his jersey. The man was not in the room when Aguilar allegedly stole the jersey, but Aguilar fell out of his bedroom window. The man told police he had no idea Aguilar had been in his room.

Police said Aguilar claimed he was pushed, but people at the house say he fell or jumped after stealing the jersey. Munroe said they cannot be sure because there were no witnesses to the fall.

Aguilar was transported to the hospital and was treated for fractures in his lower back. He was then taken to jail on the preliminary charge of theft.
