IU Health Center offers free depression screenings at residence halls this week

The IU Health Center is located at 10th Street and Jordan Avenue. Campus Action for Democracy organized a town hall Wednesday night to discuss issues students have with the center.

The IU Health Center is offering free, anonymous screening for depression symptoms during its Depression Screening Week.

Students can take in-person screenings with a Crimson CORPS member and learn about IU Health Center's Counseling and Psychological Services from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 6 at Foster Quad, 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7 at Forest Quad and 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 8 at Eigenmann Hall.

Anonymous online assessments are also available and are meant to indicate whether students need additional help, according to the IU Health Center.

Screenings are available online.

According to the IU Health Center website, signs of depression can include changes in the way someone feels, changes in sleep, changes in appetite or weight, changes in view of oneself, change in one’s ability to concentrate and thoughts about self-injury.

It is estimated that 16.2 million or 6.7 percent of all adults in the United States have had at least one major depressive episode, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. However, about 37 percent of adults with one of these depressive episodes did not receive treatment.

CAPS offers other self-help assessments such as alcohol assessment, alcohol abuse, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
