A male construction worker was killed in an incident during renovations at Swain Hall Wednesday, said IU spokesman Chuck Carney.

William M. Brown Jr., 35, worked for Pepper Construction, which was contracted by the University, Carney said.

Brown, a mason, was struck and killed by a falling piece of limestone, said Shannan Ghera, a spokeswoman for Pepper Construction. Brown was working on renovations at Swain Hall.

The IU Police Department was on the scene around 2:55 p.m. responding to the accident, Carney said.

The incident is still under investigation, IUPD Cpt. Craig Munroe said.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the mason's family and colleagues during this tragic time," Ghera said.
