INSTANT RECAP: IU loses in overtime to No. 17 Michigan on Homecoming

Senior wide receiver Simmie Cobbs Jr. attempts to run with the ball before being tackled by Charleston Southern during the Oct. 7 game at Memorial Stadium. IU (3-2) plays No. 17 Michigan (4-1) today in Bloomington.

FINAL: That’s an overtime final in Bloomington as Michigan hangs on to win 27-20.

Michigan scored on its first and only play of overtime. IU had a chance to respond and got all the way inside the five-yard line, but stalled out when Peyton Ramsey threw an interception in the end zone on fourth down to end the game.

Wolverines running back Karan Higdon exploded for 200 yards and three touchdowns to lead Michigan on the ground. IU was able to hold Michigan quarterback John O’Korn to 10-20 passing for just 58 yards.

Peyton Ramsey engineered IU’s comeback to tie the game and finished his day 20-40 with 178 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Luke Timian was Ramsey’s favorite target, as Timian hauled in seven catches for 95 yards.

IU moves to 3-3 (0-3 in the Big Ten) on the season. Up next, the Hoosiers will travel to East Lansing, Michigan, to play at Michigan State next Saturday.

OVERTIME: IU had the football at the one-yard line for first and goal, but that's as close as the Hoosiers would get. IU lost yardage on two of its next three plays to set up a fourth and goal from the three-yard line. Peyton Ramsey was pressured on the final play and threw an interception in the end zone. Hoosiers lose to No. 17 Michigan 27-20.

OVERTIME: Karan Higdon continues to have a day running the ball for Michigan with a 25-yard TD on the first play of overtime. It's his third TD of the game. Michigan leads 27-20.

(0:00 - 4th quarter): FIELD GOAL - Griffin Oakes hits a 46-yard field goal and IU has tied the game. Ramsey led the IU offense down the field from its own 35-yard line. Passes to Luke Timian and Simmie Cobbs Jr. were instrumental.

(3:27  - 4th quarter): TOUCHDOWN - IU still has hope as Ramsey finds freshman wide receiver Whop Philyor for an eight-yard TD pass. Oakes converts the extra point and IU trails 20-17.

(6:09 - 4th quarter): INTERCEPTION - Ramsey, trying to find freshman wide receiver Taysir Mack, is intercepted by Lavert Hill. Michigan ball with under six minutes to play.

(10:25 - 4th quarter): TOUCHDOWN - Michigan's Karan Higdon records his second touchdown of the game on a lengthy 59-yard TD run. Higdon burst through an initial line of IU defenders before racing away for the score. Michigan leads 20-10.

End of 3rd Quarter: Limited scoring in the third period as both teams traded punts and field position. Ellison's touchdown run the only scoring play as the Hoosiers pulled to within three points. No. 17 Michigan leads IU 13-10.

(12:06 - 3rd quarter): TOUCHDOWN - IU starts the second half with a three-and-out forced on defense and a six-play touchdown drive on offense. A 31-yard run by Morgan Ellison put IU into Michigan territory, before a pass from Peyton Ramsey to Luke Timian got IU inside the Michigan 10-yard line. Ellison polished the drive off with an eight-yard TD run. Michigan leads 13-10.

HALFTIME: No. 17 Michigan leads IU 13-3. The Wolverines have gifted IU nearly 100 yards on penalties, but the Hoosiers have been unable to take advantage. Freshman quarterback Peyton Ramsey has only 70 yards passing and as a team, IU has amassed just 22 yards rushing. Blocked field goal from the first quarter looms large.

(1:46 - 2nd quarter): FIELD GOAL - Griffin Oakes makes a 32-yard field goal to get IU on the board. Hoosiers still trail 13-3.

(10:10 - 2nd quarter): Peyton Ramsey returns to the game after leaving the previous IU drive with an injury. He is wearing a brace on his left knee.

(10:19 - 2nd quarter): TOUCHDOWN - A seven-play, 80-yard drive is capped by a 12-yard rushing touchdown for Michigan. Junior running backer Karan Higdon records the score. Wolverines lead IU 13-10. Michigan is outgaining IU 136-67 on offense.

(13:05 - 2nd quarter): INJURY - After being sacked for a loss of 13 yards, Peyton Ramsey exits the game and is replaced by senior Richard Lagow at quarterback for IU. On the sidelines, IU trainers fitted Ramsey's left knee with a brace.

(14:54 - 2nd quarter): FIELD GOAL - Michigan kicker Quinn Nordin connects on another field goal for the Wolverines, this one from 38 yards. Michigan leads 6-0.

* End of 1st Quarter: No. 17 Michigan leads 3-0 after a fast-paced quarter of play. Neither team dominated offensively, but some special teams blunders by IU have given Michigan a chance to extend the lead to 6-0 with a field goal attempt after the quarter break.

(2:00 - 1st quarter): BLOCKED FIELD GOAL - IU senior kicker Griffin Oakes has a 51-yard field goal blocked by Michigan's Maurice Hurst. The kick was returned by Lavert Hill for the Wolverines to the IU 27-yard line.

(6:35 - 1st quarter): FIELD GOAL - Michigan sophomore kicker Quinn Nordin drills a 40-yard field goal straight through the uprights, and Michigan has a 3-0 lead.
