Florida quarterback commits to the Hoosiers

Sports Filler

IU earned its first quarterback commitment of the class of 2017 on Tuesday when 247Sports composite 2-star Florida quarterback Nick Tronti announced his commitment to the Hoosiers via Twitter.

“Hoosier nation I’m coming,” Tronti said in a tweet that attached a picture with IU safeties coach Noah Joseph.

Tronti had committed to North Carolina-Charlotte in June before visiting Bloomington on Jan. 20 and flipping his commitment to IU on Tuesday evening.

The Ponte Vedra High School quarterback was drawing interest from Arizona, Ohio, Louisville and Wake Forest. He won Mr. Football in the state of Florida for the 2016 season after registering 53 total touchdowns and leading his team to the 5A state championship game.

IU quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson was the lead recruiter for Tronti. Watson occupied a quality control position for IU during the 2016 season and was promoted to quarterbacks coach when former IU offensive coordinator Kevin Johns, who also coached quarterbacks and wide receivers, was released.

“Welcome to the room, kid,” IU junior quarterback Richard Lagow tweeted Tuesday after Tronti's commitment. Many other commits from the class of 2017 also tweeted to congratulate Tronti on his decision.

Lagow was second in the Big Ten in passing in 2016, and Tronti will come into a program that will likely see some quarterback competition for the 2017 season.

National Signing Day is Feb. 1.
