Student reports gunman, IU alert issued

An IU Bloomington Alert was issued for a reported subject with a gun near 10th and Union Streets on the IUB campus Tuesday night. At approximately 8:11 p.m. students were notified that the IUPD alert was lifted. No criminal charges are being sought for the incident, according to the IUPD press release.

An IU Bloomington Alert was issued for a reported subject with a gun near 10th and Union Streets on the IUB campus Tuesday night.

IU Police Department Capt. Andy Stephenson said the department was contacted by a student claiming to have seen a black male wearing a hat and a brown coat carrying a handgun near Union Street Apartments.

Students were notified of the potential gun on campus via text, phone call and email alerts around 7:30 p.m.

When officers arrived to the scene, they were unable to locate the subject, Stephenson said. However, upon reviewing surveillance cameras, IUPD was able to identify a man fitting the student’s description. Stephenson said no weapons were visible in the video.

Stephenson said, after reviewing video footage, they do not know what direction the man traveled.

IUPD searched the area and officers identified an individual who matched the given description and had entered Pine Hall to visit a student.

The man was not a student himself and he cooperated with the police investigation.

He said he had been hiding a marijuana cigarette not a gun. Officers searched him and his vehicle and found no weapons or marijuana, according to an IUPD press release.

At approximately 8:11 p.m. students were notified that the IUPD alert was lifted. No criminal charges are being sought for the incident, according to the IUPD press release.
