A person notified the Indiana State Police that he received a phone call from 812-867-2079, the phone number for the state police in Evansville.
The scamming caller claimed the person owed the Internal Revenue Service and said he could be arrested if he didn’t pay, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police Headquarters.
This type of “spoof” scam phone call, in which a caller chooses the number that appears in caller ID, is common, according to the press release.
The Indiana State Police does not call people who are delinquent on their taxes, the press release says.
