Be Basic & Get a Pumpkin

Supporting the best season and local farmers has never been easier

Fall means apple cider, pumpkin patches and marathons of "Hocus Pocus." Embrace the season today and pick up pumpkins at the IMU farmers market.

The stand will be open from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and located on the terrace outside of the IMU’s Dunn Meadow entrance.

“We wanted to offer something new to the students, faculty and staff at IU with an emphasis on sustainability and eating fresh fruits and vegetables,” Zachary Knudsen, IMU Purchase Manager, said.

All of the pumpkins are coming from Mouzin Brothers Farms, located in Vincennes, Indiana. Types range from pumpkin pie pumpkins, approximately five inches in diameter, for $2 and carving pumpkins for $6.

In addition to pumpkins, the farmers market will also have a large selection of fresh produce, including golden delicious, honey crisp or red delicious apples, green beans, red and green cabbage, kale, green peppers, butternut and acorn squash, tomatoes, corn and more.

Knudsen said everything at the farmers market comes from a farm within 150 miles of Bloomington, their definition of “local.” Prices for these products range from 25 cents for an apple to 75 cents for half a pound of green beans to $1 for a bushel of kale.

“These are prices you can’t get in groceries stores, so we hope to attract a bunch of people,” he said.

Knudsen said he has developed recipes for each of the products available, making it easy for students living in dorms or apartments to cook their purchases into delicious meals.

“This is a great way for anyone a part of the IU community to pick up some great products and support our local farmers,” he said.

So put on your comfiest sweater and go pick out a pumpkin. It's fall, y'all.
